💉 About
Dobutamine is a sympathomimetic drug used to increase cardiac output. ✅ Primarily used in CCU, HDU, and ITU settings under close monitoring. 🔗 Check BNF here
⚙️ Mode of Action
- Beta-1 adrenergic agonist → acts on cardiac muscle receptors
- Predominantly inotropic (↑ contractility) rather than chronotropic
- May increase heart rate
- Occasionally causes hypotension due to peripheral vasodilation
📌 Indications
- Cardiogenic shock 💔
- Septic shock 🦠 (as adjunct with other vasopressors)

⚠️ Interactions

- Severe valve obstruction (e.g., aortic stenosis)
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Recent myocardial infarction (MI)
- Significant volume depletion

- ↑ Blood pressure & heart rate → arrhythmias, myocardial ischaemia
- Hypotension (less common)
- Asthma exacerbation
- GI upset: nausea, vomiting
- Headache, angina
- Thrombocytopenia, injection site reactions
