💓 Heart murmurs are extra or abnormal heart sounds caused by turbulent blood flow across the cardiac valves or within the heart. They may be innocent (physiological) or due to structural pathology such as valvular stenosis or regurgitation. Careful auscultation, combined with history and examination, helps guide diagnosis and further investigation. Systolic murmurs occur with the pulse and diastolic murmurs are asynchronous
| Type | Common Causes | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| 🔴 Systolic Ejection Murmur | Aortic stenosis, pulmonary stenosis | Crescendo–decrescendo, harsh, radiates to neck (AS) |
| 🔴 Pansystolic Murmur | Mitral regurgitation, tricuspid regurgitation, VSD | Blowing, holosystolic, radiates to axilla (MR) or sternum (TR) |
| 🟡 Early Diastolic Murmur | Aortic regurgitation, pulmonary regurgitation | High-pitched, “blowing”, best at left sternal edge |
| 🟡 Mid–Late Diastolic Murmur | Mitral stenosis, tricuspid stenosis | “Rumbling”, low-pitched, opening snap (MS) |
| ⚪ Continuous Murmur | Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) | “Machinery-like” murmur, best heard under left clavicle |
