- ๐ Steroidal antibiotic often used in combination with other agents for bone and joint infections.
- ๐ฆ Particularly useful against penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
๐ Activity
- ๐ Bacteriostatic (inhibits bacterial protein synthesis).
- ๐ฏ Strong activity vs. staphylococci, including MRSA in some cases.
- ๐ฆด Good penetration into bone and joints.
๐ Indications
- ๐ฆด Osteomyelitis.
- โค๏ธ Staphylococcal endocarditis (always in combination with other antibiotics).
- ๐ฉน Staphylococcal skin/soft tissue infections.
๐ Dose (check BNF / datasheet)
- ๐ฉน Skin infections: 250โ750 mg PO or IV every 8 hours.
- ๐ฆด Bone/joint infections, staphylococcal endocarditis: 0.5โ1 g IV TDS.
- ๐งช Monitor LFTs with high or prolonged dosing.
๐ Interactions
- โ ๏ธ Avoid concomitant statins โ risk of rhabdomyolysis.
โ ๏ธ Cautions
- ๐งช Monitor LFTs with prolonged/high doses.
- ๐ง Use with caution in patients with biliary disease.
โ Contraindications
- ๐ซ Hypersensitivity / allergy to fusidic acid.
๐ฅ Side Effects
- ๐คข GI: nausea, vomiting.
- ๐งช Hepatic: transient jaundice, hepatitis.
- ๐ง Renal: acute renal failure (rare).
- ๐ก๏ธ Hypersensitivity reactions.
