The pituitary gland, often called the "master gland", regulates multiple physiological processes through hormone secretion. It sits at the base of the brain in the sella turcica, connected to the hypothalamus via the infundibulum. It has two main lobes: β Anterior Pituitary (Adenohypophysis) (glandular, larger) β Posterior Pituitary (Neurohypophysis) (neural, smaller)
The pituitary regulates growth, metabolism, reproduction, water balance, and stress responses. Anterior pituitary β produces trophic hormones (GH, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH, PRL). Posterior pituitary β stores/release ADH & oxytocin. Disorders can cause profound endocrine syndromes (e.g. acromegaly, DI, SIADH).
