Mallet Finger
๐๏ธ About
- Mallet Finger, also known as "baseball finger," is an injury to the extensor tendon at the distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ).
- The injury prevents active extension at the fingertip, leaving it in a drooped flexed position.
- Common in sports injuries (ball striking tip of finger) or domestic trauma (e.g. tucking sheets).
โ๏ธ Aetiology & Mechanism
- Caused by a sudden forced flexion of the fingertip while the finger is actively extended.
- Two main injury patterns:
- Tendinous mallet: Extensor tendon stretches or ruptures.
- Bony mallet: Avulsion fracture where tendon pulls off part of distal phalanx.
