- ๐ Antifungal agent, but resistance develops rapidly if used alone.
- โก Usually given in combination with amphotericin B.
โ๏ธ Action
- ๐ฌ Converted (deaminated) inside fungal cells to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).
- ๐งช 5-FU inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis โ blocks nucleic acid production.
๐งช Properties
- ๐ง Good tissue distribution, including CSF (useful in meningitis).
- โฑ๏ธ Plasma half-life: ~3โ4 hours.
๐ Indications
- ๐ฆ Severe yeast infections.
- ๐ง Cryptococcal infections, e.g. cryptococcal meningitis (with amphotericin B).

- ๐ง Reduce dose in renal impairment.
- ๐งช Higher risk of toxicity in patients with AIDS โ monitor levels closely.

๐ฅ Side Effects
- ๐ฉธ Bone marrow suppression โ โ Hb, WCC, platelets (cytopenias).
- ๐คข GI toxicity โ nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, toxic enterocolitis.
๐ Dose
- ๐ Flucytosine: 50โ150 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6 hrs.
- โก Almost always given with amphotericin B to reduce resistance.
