Patellar Bursitis
Anatomy
Prepatellar bursitis : Commonly known as "Housemaid's knee".
Infrapatellar bursitis : Often referred to as "Clergyman's knee".
Aetiology
Prepatellar : Caused by friction at the front of the knee between the patellar tendon and skin. Often seen in occupations like carpentry and others involving prolonged kneeling.
Infrapatellar : Inflammation occurs between the patella and tendon, commonly affecting those who kneel in a more upright position.
Clinical Presentation
Prepatellar : Noticeable swelling in front of the knee.
Postpatellar : Swelling may also be present behind the knee.
Management
Both conditions benefit from firm bandaging to manage swelling.
Recommend protective knee pads for those working on their knees.
The bursa may require aspiration if swelling persists or is severe.
