📚 NICE Guidance for Medical Students - Part 3 This section adds more high-yield topics across neurology, gastroenterology, renal, respiratory, dermatology, rheumatology, ENT, ophthalmology, haematology and prescribing safety. For MLA/finals, learn the pattern, red flags, first-line action and referral threshold.
| Specialty | Must-Know NICE-Style Patterns | Do-Not-Miss Emergency |
|---|---|---|
| Neurology | Stroke, seizure, headache red flags, Parkinson’s medicines, MS relapse | Stroke, status epilepticus, meningitis, SAH |
| Respiratory | Asthma severity, COPD oxygen targets, pneumonia severity, TB clues | Life-threatening asthma, PE, tension pneumothorax |
| Gastroenterology | Dyspepsia red flags, IBD, coeliac, GI bleed, jaundice | Perforation, variceal bleed, cholangitis |
| Renal | CKD staging with eGFR/ACR, AKI causes, nephritic/nephrotic | Hyperkalaemia, obstructed infected kidney |
| Rheumatology | RA early referral, OA core management, gout, SLE/vasculitis clues | GCA visual symptoms, septic arthritis, vasculitic renal/lung disease |
| Dermatology | Eczema, psoriasis, cellulitis mimics, acne/rosacea | SJS/TEN, necrotising fasciitis, meningococcal rash |
| ENT/Ophthalmology | Red eye, hearing loss, vertigo, quinsy, epistaxis | Acute glaucoma, orbital cellulitis, epiglottitis, SSNHL |
| Haematology | Anaemia patterns, VTE, anticoagulation, myeloma clues | Neutropenic sepsis, TTP, major bleeding |
The easiest way to learn NICE-style medicine is to build recognition maps. For each symptom, ask: what is common, what is dangerous, and what single action must happen now? For example, headache is often migraine, but thunderclap headache means SAH; red eye is often conjunctivitis, but pain with reduced vision means urgent ophthalmology; breathlessness is often COPD/asthma, but hypoxia with pleuritic pain means PE must be considered. This pattern-based approach is exactly how finals and MLA questions test safe clinical judgement.
