Used in Motor Neurone Disease (ALS) โ approved by NICE.
- โ๏ธ Not prescribed in every case of MND (specialist decision).
- ๐ซ Often not used in Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS), which progresses more slowly.
โ๏ธ Mode of Action
- ๐งช Blocks tetrodotoxin-sensitive sodium channels.
- โฌ๏ธ Reduces glutamate release โ limits excitotoxicity on motor neurons.
๐ Indication & Dose
- ALS (severe): Riluzole 50 mg BD, taken before meals to reduce nausea.
- ๐ท Annual cost in UK โ ยฃ3,718 (NICE-approved, prescribed under specialist advice).
โ ๏ธ Contraindications
- ๐ซ Liver disease / abnormal LFTs.

- ๐คข Nausea, vomiting, weakness, somnolence, tachycardia.
