Fosfomycin

- Fosfomycin, a phosphonic acid antibacterial
- Active against a range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus and Enterobacteriaceae.
Mode of action
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall production
Indication/Dose
- Uncomplicated UTI: Fosfomycin 3 g for 1 dose.
- Complicated urinary-tract infections: Fosfomycin 12-16 g daily in 2-3 divided doses (max. per dose 8 g)

Interactions
- Metoclopramide slows absorption of Fosfomycin so leave at least 2 to 3 hours between preparations or avoid metoclopramide if possible
Cautions
- Elderly and heart failure when used IV, Hypernatraemia

- Abdominal pain; diarrhoea; headache; nausea; vomiting
