- ๐ Inhibits mycobacterial arabinosyl transferases, enzymes essential for cell wall arabinogalactan synthesis.
- ๐งฑ Weakens mycobacterial cell wall.
๐งช Properties
- ๐ง Enters CSF if meninges are inflamed (e.g., TB meningitis).
๐ Indications
- ๐ฅ Tuberculosis โ always given in combination with at least 3 other anti-TB drugs (to prevent resistance).
๐ Interactions
- โ ๏ธ Aluminium-containing antacids โ absorption โ avoid co-administration.
โ ๏ธ Cautions
- ๐ง Reduce dose in renal failure (renally cleared).
- ๐ Regular visual monitoring required during therapy.
โ Contraindications
- ๐ซ Patients in whom visual monitoring is not possible (e.g., very young children).
- ๐ซ History of optic neuritis / retrobulbar neuritis.

๐ Dose
- ๐ Standard: 15 mg/kg OD PO (usually combined with rifampicin, isoniazid, and pyrazinamide).
- ๐ง Higher doses may be used in TB meningitis (specialist advice).
