โ ๏ธ About 1โ6% of penicillin-sensitive patients will also be allergic to cephalosporins.
โ Those with a history of immediate hypersensitivity to penicillin or other beta-lactams should not receive cephalosporins.
โ ๏ธ Use with caution in patients with milder penicillin/ฮฒ-lactam sensitivity.

โ๏ธ Action
- ๐ Inhibits peptidoglycan cross-linking โ prevents bacterial cell wall formation.
- ๐ Bactericidal action.
๐ Indications
- ๐ง Urinary tract infections (UTI).
- ๐ซ Chest infections.
- ๐ ENT infections.
- ๐ฉน Skin and soft tissue infections.
- ๐ Dose: 250โ500 mg every 8 hours (PO). Max: 4 g/day.

๐ Interactions
- โ ๏ธ May increase warfarin effect โ monitor INR more closely.
โ ๏ธ Cautions
- ๐ซ Allergy to penicillin or cephalosporins.
- ๐ง Renal impairment (dose adjustment may be needed).
- ๐งช May cause false-positive urine glucose (dipstick).
- ๐งช May cause false-positive Coombsโ test.
โ Contraindications
- Severe hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins or penicillin.
๐ฅ Side Effects
- ๐คข GI: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, antibiotic-associated colitis.
- ๐ก๏ธ Hypersensitivity: rash, urticaria, StevensโJohnson syndrome, TEN.
- ๐งช Hepatic: hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice.
- ๐ฉธ Haematological: โ WCC, thrombocytopenia, granulocytopenia, aplastic anaemia.
- ๐ง Renal: interstitial nephritis.
- ๐ง Neurological: headache, delirium (rare).
