Interferon Beta ๐
๐ About
Always check the BNF link here.
- ๐ Interferon ฮฒ-1a and ฮฒ-1b are glycoprotein cytokines used as disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) in MS.
- Reduce relapse frequency and slow disability progression in relapsingโremitting MS (RRMS).
- Formulations include: Avonex, Rebif, Betaferon, Extavia.
โ๏ธ Action
- Natural protein produced by virally infected cells.
- ๐ Inhibits viral DNA synthesis and modulates immune responses.
- โฌ๏ธ T-cell activation and trafficking across the bloodโbrain barrier โ โ CNS inflammation.
- Shifts cytokine profile toward anti-inflammatory activity.
๐งพ Types
- Interferon ฮฒ-1a (Avonex โ IM weekly).
- Interferon ฮฒ-1a (Rebif โ SC three times weekly).
- Interferon ฮฒ-1b (Betaferon โ SC alternate days).
- Interferon ฮฒ-1b (Extavia โ SC alternate days).
๐ Indications
- Relapsingโremitting MS (RRMS): โ relapses and MRI lesion load (~30% reduction).
- Progressive MS: less benefit, limited use.
- Some investigational/adjunct roles in cancer therapy (not routine).
โ Contraindications
- ๐ซ See BNF for full list.
- Active severe depression or suicidal ideation โ caution/avoid.
- Hypersensitivity to interferon or excipients.
๐ฅ Side Effects
- ๐ค Flu-like syndrome: fever, chills, malaise (common at initiation).
- ๐ง Headache, depression, fatigue.
- ๐ฉธ Myelosuppression โ monitor FBC regularly.
- ๐ซ Liver enzyme elevation โ monitor LFTs.
- ๐ Injection site reactions.
