National Early Warning Score NEWS 2 Score
🩺 NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score 2) has been formally endorsed by NHS England and NHS Improvement as the national early warning system for recognising acutely ill patients, including those with sepsis. It was last updated in December 2017.

- NEWS2 is based on an aggregate scoring system where points are allocated to routine physiological measurements.
- It uses 6 simple parameters to detect patient deterioration early, aiming to trigger interventions before serious illness or death occurs.

⚡ Clinical Response to NEWS Trigger Thresholds
| NEWS Score | Clinical Response |
|---|---|
| 0 | ✅ Continue routine NEWS monitoring (12-hourly observations). |
| 3 in a single parameter | ⚠️ Unusual finding → urgent review by a competent clinician (e.g., ward doctor) to assess cause and adjust monitoring/escalation. |
| 1–4 | 👩⚕️ Review by a competent registered nurse → consider changing observation frequency or escalating care. |
| 5–6 (Medium risk) | 🚨 Key trigger → urgent review by a doctor or acute team nurse; decide if escalation to a team with critical care skills is required. |
| ≥7 (High risk) | 🆘 Emergency response → immediate review by critical care outreach/ICU team. Continuous monitoring and likely transfer to HDU/ICU. |
