- Non-absorbed cation-exchange compound that selectively binds potassium in the GI tract.
- Onset of action: about 1 hour โฑ๏ธ (faster than patiromer).

โ๏ธ Mode of Action
- Acts as a selective potassium binder in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Exchanges sodium and hydrogen ions for potassium, increasing faecal potassium excretion.
๐ Indication
- Treatment of hyperkalaemia.
๐ Dosing (check BNF for confirmation)
- Acute Hyperkalaemia: 10 g PO every 8 hours for up to 72 hours.
- Maintenance/Ongoing Hyperkalaemia: 5โ10 g PO once daily.
๐ Interactions
- Can reduce absorption of other oral medicines โ give other drugs โฅ 2 hours before or after SZC.
โ ๏ธ Cautions
- Fluid overload and oedema risk (due to sodium content).
- Patients with heart failure, hypertension, or CKD โ monitor closely.

- Severe constipation, bowel obstruction, or impaction.
- History of hypersensitivity to the drug or excipients.
โ Side Effects
- Fluid imbalance, oedema, peripheral swelling.
- Constipation, nausea.
- Hypokalaemia if excessive dosing.
