Ehlers–Danlos syndromes 🧬

Ehlers–Danlos syndromes (EDS) are a heterogeneous set of heritable connective tissue conditions; hypermobile EDS is diagnosed clinically, whereas rare subtypes often have molecular confirmation.
Recognise
- Joint hypermobility with dislocations, chronic musculoskeletal pain, skin hyperextensibility or tissue fragility, depending on subtype.
- Arterial, intestinal or uterine rupture is a concern with vascular EDS but is not characteristic of every hypermobility presentation.
Approach
- Assess symptomatic joint instability, function and alternative diagnoses; document personal/family history of vascular events.
- Urgent emergency assessment for sudden severe chest/abdominal pain or unexplained haemorrhage in known/suspected vascular EDS.
- Refer suspected monogenic/vascular EDS to specialist genetics; hypermobility management uses rehabilitation, pacing and multidisciplinary support.
